Reading more, beyond the bottom line... Knowing the Company Profile, which is a basic overview of the company you are researching, is critical. Read the company summary description as first step to understand more about what the company does and, most importantly, how it makes its money.

In this example, and throughout all of these stock homework steps, we are using Intel Corporation as our example company and stock. Its stock symbol is "INTC". We are big fans of using the Yahoo! Finance site as a stock research tool... so we start off going to that site (see link below), and entering the company name, "Intel", which then auto-fills the form field to show you that Intel is symbol "INTC.". We see the "BUSINESS SUMMARY" by going to the bottom of the page, where you can read about what the company does, and the primary way it makes its money.
Stock Symbol: "INTC" is Intel's stock symbol.
Current Price: Intel's current price is $24.22 (that day)
What the company does: Intel designs, manufactures and then sells its integrated circuit boards for communications and computing industries worldwide. Its microprocessors are used in myriad products including all forms of computers, storage products, and consumer electronic devices.

How it makes its money: Now that you know the correct stock ticker symbol and how to learn more, you can begin to understand how it makes its money, and what percentage of its profits is generated most by what divisions it has. For example, you might find out that Intel makes most of its money (a possible vulnerability) through its chips for PCs, but only a small amount on graphics chips. This may or may not be true.
