Stock Industry Subcategories - with example companies provided:

While not perfect in every case, this method to categorize your company stock into both a sector and an industry subcategory helps you to narrow down your stock search and comparison with competitors.

For instance, with Verizon, our stock example, you would find that it belongs in the SERVICES sector, and further it is in the COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES industry subcategory.  You can then look in the same industry subcategory to find that AT&T - symbol T - is a key competitor to Verizon.

This is when using Google Finance, which we think is a better, more updated service.  Interesting to note that, in Yahoo Finance, it lists Verizon and AT&T under the Technology Sector, in the industry subcategory, Telecom Services - Domestic.  Given that both Verizon and AT&T are now heavily involved in wireless and TV services, it is more appropriate to list them in the Communications Services area which describes them (and fits) more broadly.
